Infertility is the inability to get pregnant (conceive) even after a year of trying unprotected sex.Infertility affects men and women equally.The inability to conceive a child can be stressful and frustrating, but a number of treatments are available for male infertility.

Causes of Infertility in Men:

  • ›Infertility can be caused due to various reasons.
  • ›For 1 in 4 couples, a cause cannot be identified also known as unexplained infertility.

1. Men’s Age:

For a Men above age 40, the overall chances of pregnancy reduces as qualtiy of sperm decreases.

2. Problems in Sperm:

A common cause of infertility in men is poor-quality semen (the fluid containing sperm) that’s ejaculated during sex.

Possible reasons for abnormal semen include;

  • ›Low sperm count – you may have a low sperm count or no sperm at all.
  • ›Abnormal sperm movement – this will make it harder for sperm to swim to the egg.
  • ›Abnormal shape – abnormal shape makes it harder for them to move and fertilize an egg.

3. Impotence (Erectile Dysfunction):

›Impotence (erectile dysfunction) is the inability to attain or maintain an erection long enough for sexual intercourse.›This can make it difficult or impossible to have intercourse.

4. Ejaculation Disorders (aspermia):

  • ›Ejaculation disorder(aspermia) is the most common cause of infertility in which man has a problem in ejaculating his semen.
  • ›Either a man is ejaculating too soon, too late, back into his bladder or no ejaculation at all.

There are three types of ejaculation disorders:- premature, delayed or retrograde

  • ›Premature ejaculation – in which the man ejaculates sooner than he or his partner would like.
  • ›Delayed ejaculation (impaired ejaculation) – in which a man needs more than 30 minutes of stimulation to reach orgasm and ejaculate.
  • ›Retrograde ejaculation (dry ejaculation) – it happens when sperm doesn’t leave the body through the penis but is pushed back into the bladder where urine is stored.

5. Hypogonadism:

  • ›Hypogonadism is an abnormally low level of testosterone, the male sex hormone involved in making sperm.
  • ›It could be caused by a tumour, taking illegal drugs, or Klinefelter syndrome (a rare syndrome involving an extra female chromosome).

6. Medicines and Drugs:

  • ›Anabolic steroids – used illegally to build muscle, long-term abuse can reduce sperm count and sperm mobility
  • ›Chemotherapy – medicines used in chemotherapy can sometimes severely reduce sperm production
  • ›Illicit drug use – marijuana and cocaine, both can affect semen quality.

7. Herbal Medicines:

Some herbal remedies, such as root extracts of the Chinese herb Tripterygium wilfordii, can affect the production of sperm or reduce the size of your testicles.

Unexplained Infertility:

  • ›This is when no cause of infertility is found in both partners.
  • ›It accounts for 1 in 4 cases of infertility.
  • ›If a cause for your fertility problems has not been found, talk to your doctor about further procedure.
  • ›Treatment includes fertility medications, lifestyle changes, intrauterine insemination (IUI), and invitro fertilization (IVF).
